I had a friend approach me about making a baby shower cake and treats for her friend recently. She was interested in a gender reveal cake and I had always wanted to have a go at that idea so I accepted. (It was a boy!)

So they showed me some designs that basically consisted of while fondant cakes decorated with gold lace. I was like “Suuureeee!” But truth be told, that was a tough one dude. I had so much trouble getting the lace out of the mold without it breaking into pieces. Also I made the mistake of accepting to do the cake filling with whipped cream instead of buttercream. Why you ask? because you can’t cover whipped cream frosting with fondant, and so I didn’t frost the outside of the cake, and as a result the cake layers would show through the white fondant. Trial and error, my friend! Trial and error!

For the gender reveal we talk about the options, like having blue M&Ms in the middle or blue frosting, and ended up going with one blue layer of cake. It was cute – putting aside the fact that I’ll never cover a whipped cream frosted cake with fondant again 😐

I also did some fancy cupcakes that the mom-to-be wanted to put around the cake (as seen in the picture above) and cake pops. those were super fun to make!
I think it is so lovely to have friends give you the opportunity to make them a cake for their special occasions; granted they also pay way less this way for a cake. But the challenge here is that there are a million different styles and methods of decorating a cake and I think I prefer to master it in a particular style/method than be all over the place and not feel confident about what I am doing. The positive side of an experience like this is that I might have never tried making a lace cake. But now I have and it was definitely a great experience 😀
