A few years ago I took a class to learn how to make stained glass just so I could make the stained glass scenes from the prelude of one of Disney’s best, the Beauty and the Beast. And after three sessions I quit! Working with glass is hard, man!
But I never got that idea out of my head. Recently, when I was working with hard candy to make my Little Prince cake, it suddenly dawned on me that I can create the same design with hard candy instead of glass.
First, I drew the rose scene on a tracing paper and coped it onto a silicone mat. Then I cut it to make holes where the “glass” would go.

Then after making the cookie dough (simple chocolate cookie recipe) I rolled it and placed the cut silicone on top and cut the holes out. You have to do this all on the baking sheet that you will be putting in the over because forget about moving the cookie dough after you cut the design. It will break. I baked the cookie for about 5 minutes then filled the holes with crushed hard candy of different colors and baked for another 4 minutes. After the candy has malted, take the cookie out and leave it until it is completely cooled down. Believe me, it is worth the wait :p

I think this cookie looks fine on it’s own. But I ended up using it as a topped for a cake. However, since the cookie has a lot of detail and is rather colorful, I decided to keep the cake simple. I used dark grey fondant and did a castle look.

What’s really cool is putting a candle behind the cookie and turning off the lights.
