It is always difficult for me to choose favorites. I do not have a favorite color, or a favorite flavor. I certainly do not have a favorite dessert! Or movie, or song. BUT I do have a favorite book; “The Little Prince”. I was recently reading the beautiful novelette again and looking at the illustrations and thought of an idea for a cake. It took me a while and many tries to get the design right, as it is an original idea and there were no tutorials or molds that I needed for the process. It got frustrating at times but it was a really fun process and I am very happy with the final work. I will be making more. Here is the picture that started it all!

The look I wanted to achieve was 3D and I needed bird molds to make lollipops with hard candy. I couldn’t find any nice molds of birds flying and so I decided to make my own. I zoomed on one of the birds from the original illustration and made a clay sculpture out of it. Then made a mold using that.

After that I needed to make the hard candy lollipops, and I played around with the different ways to do that. I made hard candy from scratch, melted different kinds of hard candy on the stove and in the microwave. Working with hard candy is very challenging because they harden so quickly and if you over heat them they change color and turn brown. I wanted a clear blue or teal for my candies. I ended up mixing a particular ration of blue jolly ranchers with clear candy to get a lighter blue.
After I prepared the lollipops I was ready to decorate my cake. am a painter so the rest was downhill and fun. Sketching the design and mixing colors… I tried to stick to blues and the complementary hues of orange.
Since my focus was on the decorations, for the cake I just used a simple vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream covered with white fondant.
